Back in 2000, world leaders at the UN Millennium Summit agreed to work towards a series of eight goals in order to hit certain targets by 2015.
These millennium development goals sparked progress in areas like gender equality, child mortality, and access to education. And, in 2010, the proportion of the population without sustainable access to safe drinking water was cut in half, hitting the target five years ahead of schedule.
